Non Standard Car Insurance Made Simple !

Most insurers will happily quote for your car insurance provided you fit their “standard” acceptance criteria.

So what happens when you don’t?

If you’re a mature driver with a zero no claim bonus, or if you have an open claim, or own a high valued or higher spec car or have recently lived abroad or have an unusual occupation, then sourcing cheap car insurance in Ireland could prove difficult.

Well, at First Ireland Car Insurance, we’ve made that process easy!

We’ve agreements in place with our specialty insurers that can cater for most non-standard car insurance conditions, provided you fit all other normal acceptance criteria. With our extensive knowledge of the market and our 35 years experience of negotiating and arranging car insurance, we will find you the best cover we can at our best price based on your own personal circumstances.

We have provided an online quote option to make the process quicker. Don’t worry if you can’t return a quotation initially. Your details will be passed to our Non-Standard Car Insurance Broker Team and a specialist advisor will be in touch with you to discuss your policy options.

Car Insurance with
Zero No Claims Bonus

Normally insurers look for a minimum of a one year no claim bonus or current one year named driving experience. Through our specialist insurer panel, First Ireland can provide affordable motor insurance options to drivers with a zero or expired no claim bonus.

Car Insurance for
Drivers with Open Claims

Most insurers won’t consider an unsettled claim. This means you could be bound to your current insurer until your claim is finalised. Depending on your claim type and the anticipated costs, we may be able to provide you with a cheaper car insurance option.

Car Insurance for
Drivers Moving to Ireland

Are you re-locating to Ireland? Looking for lower cost car insurance. Subject to your licence and the country in which you were driving, we may be able to recognise the foreign no claim bonus you earned driving abroad for returning Expats and Non Nationals.

Car Insurance for
Performance Vehicles

Having difficulty sourcing lower cost car insurance for your dream car? First Ireland can offer competitive car insurance for luxury cars and cars with a higher spec and higher value, albeit with some added security measures.

Car Insurance for Drivers
with Unusual Occupations

Your occupation is a deciding quote factor for most insurers and can impact on your premium. We have agreements with our specialist insurers that can cater for drivers with the more unusual occupations e.g. professional sports people, embassy staff etc.

Car Insurance F.A.Q.

What is an Excess?

An excess is the amount you contribute towards a claim. The excess amount will be listed in your policy schedule or Quotation.

What is a No Claims Bonus?

A no claims bonus is a discount you earn for every year you are insured and do not make a claim on your policy.

Do I have a No Claims Bonus as a named driver?

If you have never had a policy in your own name, but have driving experience as a Named driver or on a company policy we should be able to give you an introductory no claims discount, if you were driving claim free.

How much is a No Claims Bonus discount worth?

Each insurers discount scale varies. Typically you can earn at least 10% for 1 year and 50% for 5 years claim free. Some Insurers will give extra discounts for 6 or 7 years claims free.

What happens to my No Claims Bonus if I have a claim?

In theory you can lose your entire no claims bonus. However, most of the policies we recommend include some level of protection to your no claims bonus. That can be either Step Back Bonus Protection, where part of your bonus is ‘stepped back’ for example from 5 years back to 3 years, or a higher level of Bonus Protection.

What is Step Back Bonus Protection?

Step Back Bonus Protection means that following a claim your earned no claims bonus discount is reduced or Stepped Back - instead of a complete loss. For example; if you have a 5 years No Claims Bonus and your policy has a step back of 2 years. Then following a claim your bonus of 5 years will be reduced by 2 years and you will be entitled to a 3 year No Claims Bonus discount at your next renewal.

What is a No Claims Bonus Protection?

No claims bonus protection is where your policy has the benefit that allows you to make a claim without affecting your no claims bonus. Insurers can include limits on the number of claims made, the monetary value of the claim and the type of claim.

What is Open Driving?

Open Driving is a benefit that can be given by some Insurers on SOME policies. It means that someone who is not Named on your policy can drive your car. There are restrictions set by each insurer. For example; drivers might have to have a Full driving licence and be aged between 30 and 75. These rules/restrictions vary between each insurer but will always be noted on your Certificate of Insurance.

What is Driving of Other Cars?

Driving of other cars is cover to drive someone else’s car, under your own insurance policy. If your policy includes this benefit it is your own policy that will be affected if a claim occurs and it only covers the policyholder. Normally, cover is restricted to third party only. In simple terms this means that you are legally covered to drive the car and any damage you do to the car you are driving is not covered. Some policies we offer can give Comprehensive Driving of other Cars.
